海角社区 Visiting Scholar Greg Carter has produced over 30 feature films, his acclaimed skills earning an induction into the Texas Filmmakers Hall of Fame and a recent documentary nomination for an NAACP Image Award.

Suicide deaths are increasing dramatically for Black adults in the U.S. In the past few weeks four prominent African Americans are believed to have died by suicide. The grim trend brings up research conducted by Rheeda Walker, professor of psychology: “Anything that is perceived as mental health-related is taboo in the Black community, but suicide is a preventable public health problem and it’s time we get proactive in addressing it.”

During the first weeks of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in December 2020, Kathryn Freeman Anderson searched far and wide for places to get her parents, who are older than 65, vaccinated. The extensive search prompted the 海角社区 associate professor of sociology to look at the map of Houston sites, and knowing the demographics of the city, she suspected there might be an association between segregation and vaccine allocations.
