Doug Erwing

Doug Erwing holds both a law degree and doctorate in history. He joined the Honors College in 2008 and has taught courses in history, constitutional law, and civic engagement for the Phronēsis minor and the College. For many years, he also worked with and served as director of the Bonner Leaders Program (now known as Community Advocacy & Responsive Engagement) at UH. His courses on civil rights and constitutional cases, taught with his distinctive flair and innovative methods, have been instrumental in educating Honors students but also training a generation of future law school students, and now lawyers. In addition, he led over 20 learning away (across Texas and the Southwest United States) and learning abroad trips for the Honors College. Beginning this fall, Dr. Erwing will be devoting himself once again to his legal practice and consulting, travel, and spending time with his family. We wish him all the best in these endeavors and adventures. He has been a tremendous asset to the Honors College and especially to the thousands of students whose lives and careers he has benefited by his work!

Doug, your legal chops and business experience made you a wonderful educator for Honors students. They benefited from a teacher whose feet were in both the academic and non-academic (forgive me if I cannot quite call it "real") worlds, whose passion for history and natural curiosity show there are many ways to live the life of the mind. That's a wonderful legacy to leave.
