[Seminar] Behavioral biometrics: opportunities and challenges!

Monday, October 28, 2024

11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Speaker

Dr. Rajesh Kumar
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Bucknell University

Location

PGH 232

Abstract

Physical biometrics鈥攕uch as fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris scans鈥攈ave been extensively researched for applications like authentication, identification, health monitoring, and personalization. On the other hand, the full potential of behavioral biometrics鈥攅ncompassing everyday actions like reading (e.g., gaze patterns), writing (e.g., keystroke dynamics), scrolling (e.g., touchstrokes), walking (gait), and speaking (speech)鈥攔emains largely unexplored. Unlike physical biometrics, behavioral data can be collected passively without user intervention and is inherently more difficult to spoof or alter, making it a promising tool for various applications. This talk will discuss the exciting possibilities and challenges behavioral biometrics offer and conclude by presenting a paper on detecting plagiarism using keystrokes in the age of large language models (LLMs).

About the Speaker

Rajesh Kumar is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Bucknell University. He earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University, following his Master鈥檚 in Computer Applications from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. His research explores the intersection of behavioral data from smart devices and machine learning with security, privacy, natural language processing, education, and healthcare applications. Much of his work focuses on enhancing the trustworthiness of behavioral biometric systems. Dr. Kumar has contributed to 22 publications in leading conferences and journals, with an average citation impact of over 37 per paper. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including Best Paper at the IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB), Highest-Impact Paper Award at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Workshops, and three Best Reviewer Awards from IJCB.
