Graduate Student Professional Development Seminar

This seminar is primarily aimed at first and second year PhD students in Mathematics. However, others are welcome to join if they feel that they may benefit from some of the content.

Some topics which we will aim to cover are:

  • The art of teaching mathematics at the university level.
  • Research profiles of faculty members and research groups.
  • Navigating the PhD program post-prelims : choosing an advisor, writing a thesis, securing internships, applying for jobs, etc.
  • Guest speakers: past students or potential employers from academics and industry.

The seminar will take place sporadically during the semester, on Wednesdays from 3-4pm in PGH 646, unless otherwise indicated below.  It will not conflict with the Colloquium.

In addition, sometimes there are special talks or Q&A sessions aimed at graduate students, before our regular seminar talks. Although these are not officially part of the Professional Development seminar, they may be of interest to some students and are listed below in blue.
